The XXI International Symposium on Mathematical Methods Applied to the Sciences (XXI SIMMAC) is the most important event in applied mathematics in Central America. It is organized by the Research Center in Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) every two years, with the support of the Department of Mathematics (EMA).

During XXI SIMMAC, the Latin American Conference on Statistical Computing (LACSC), organized by the Latin American Regional Section (LARS) of the International Association of Statistical Computing (IASC). Previous conferences took place in Gramado, Brazil (2016) and Valparaiso, Chile (2017).

The III Latin American Conference on Statistical Computing (LACSC) will take place simultaneously. It is organized by the Latin American Regional Section (LARS) of the International Association of Statistical Computing (IASC). Previous conferences took place in Gramado, Brazil (2016) and Valparaiso, Chile (2017).

Since 1978, SIMMAC has been developed with the participation of several mathematicians and scientists of affine disciplines, coming from Central America, Europe, North America and South America.

Registration to the SIMMAC will begin on Monday 26th at 2 p.m., at the “Edificio de Aulas y Laboratorio de Ciencias Básicas” located in research campus “Ciudad de la Investigación”. Registration on Tuesday 27th will start at 8 a.m.

Both conferences (XXI SIMMAC and lll LACSC) will take place from February 27th to March 2nd, 2018.

Place

The XXI SIMMAC will be held at the “Edificio de Aulas y Laboratorio de Ciencias Básicas”, located at the research campus of the University of Costa Rica, in San Pedro. This is a town near San José, the capital of the country. Sessions will take place in the Faculty of Education of the University of Costa Rica. 

International flights arrive to Juan Santamaría International Airport (code SJO). There will be a shuttle for all the participants arriving on Monday 26th. The shuttle schedule will be posted soon. Otherwise, we advise to take an airport taxi (orange color). The price is around $40 to San José downtown. A list of suggested hotels can be found in the “Local Information” tab. 

In February, weather in Costa Rica is cold (17ºC – 23ºC, 62ºF – 74ºF) in San Jose and warm on the coast (20ºC – 26ºC, 68ºF – 80ºF), sunny, and sometimes windy. Usually, there is no rain in this period.
